Most of my work has to do with fiction as a tool for identity development, blending memoir and analysis to discuss how specific stories deeply changed me as a person and could be used to educate others. How could Pokemon work as service animals? Are Pokemon service animals? Here I discuss some of the canonical ways Pokemon are used to support disabled folks, brainstorm ways they could treat specific symptoms, and use Pokemon as a tool to teach people about real world service animals and disabilities.

Growing up, one of my favorite books was Karen Hesse’s The Music of Dolphins because I felt like it mirrored my experience growing up with an autism diagnosis. Thing is… the main character isn’t autistic, she’s a girl that grew up in the ocean before scientists abducted her.
